COVID-19 Treatment with Paxlovid

Patient Selection and Treatment Initiation

  • Paxlovid should be administered to symptomatic patients with confirmed mild to moderate COVID-19 who are within 5 days of symptom onset and at high risk for progressing to severe disease, as recommended by the American College of Physicians 1, 2, 3

Important Drug Interaction Considerations

  • Ritonavir, a component of Paxlovid, is a strong CYP3A inhibitor that causes many drug-drug interactions, and the American Medical Association suggests using resources like the Liverpool COVID-19 Drug Interaction Tool to check for specific interactions 4, 5
  • Contraindicated medications include certain antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, and statins, which are highly dependent on CYP3A for clearance, according to the National Institutes of Health 5

Monitoring and Follow-up

  • Monitor patients for common adverse effects, including dysgeusia, diarrhea, and potential hepatotoxicity, as advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 4, 5
